Lessons learnt driving Route 66

There inevitable a few things you learn from doing a 2 week road trip which I thought I would share…

  • We all want to drive a Mustang Convertible, however it is a two man car, you can do three people but it is at a push and you will have to make sure you do short days as sitting in the back is not comfortable and you do not have very much rooms for luggage, you have room for max three gym holdalls!
  • The optimal time for driving Route 66 is between  14-16 days as that will keep the daily driving to 290 km / 180 miles so you have time to stop at what you think it interesting without creating massive day trips.
  • Try to work in a day or two where you stay at the same place so you don’t have to hit the road every day.
  • Have lots a water in the car if you drive during the summer, we averaged about 36 degrees Celsius throughout the trip with some days at 44 degrees in Las Vegas.
  • Don’t trust the the SatNav, make sure you have mapped out your route on a map and use the SatNav as a backup. Here is the TomTom files I used.
  • Have a vague idea of what you want to see along the route, it helps with the planning.
  • Use a first tier car rental company like Hertz or Avis, not a budget company like Budget which will try and add more charges along the way, and despite claiming that the one way fee is $xxx but when you return the car adding 30% tax on it as well, so make sure you have all in writing.

Finally, enjoy the route, it is great fun!
